Tooth whitening

Whitening is useful in removing stains and helping you achieve your brightest smile, your dentist will inform you if you are a good candidate for whitening during your consultation. In order to proceed with whitening whether in office or at home, a recent dental hygiene appointment is required to ensure and even result. Whitening is carried out using a gel, which is usually hydrogen or carbamide peroxide based, the gel once placed on your teeth breaks down releasing oxygen molecules that penetrate the enamel and dentin dissolving stain and in turn whitens your teeth. Your dentist/hygienist will provide you with instruction on how to maintain your new smile and when touch up is suggested. Touch up varies from individual to individual based on personal habits such as smoking, wine consumption, coffee/tea consumtion, home care routine etc…..

Veneers

Veneers are a layer of material placed over a tooth to improve the aesthetics of a smile and/or protect the tooth's surface from damage. Veneers can be made of composite or porcelain and are bonded using a resin cement.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are placed to protect a tooth.  Crowns are suggested when a tooth is heavily restored and/or has been endodontically (root canal) treated. At the first appointment the dentist will decide if your tooth can support a crown, if so the tooth is reduced in size, an impression is taken and sent out to the lab for fabrication, a temporary crown is then made and temporarily cemented in your mouth until such time as the permanent crown is ready. At the second visit the dentist will remove the temporary crown, ensure the fit is precise and that the color blends with the rest of your smile, the crown is then permanently cemented into place and can be used as any other tooth in your mouth.

Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are fixed prosthetic devices that are cemented onto existing teeth or implants. A crown is used to entirely cover a tooth that has been damaged or compromised, besides strengthening a tooth a crown can be used to improve appearance, shape or alignment. A bridge may be recommended if you are missing one or more teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth will eventually cause neighbouring teeth to drift or rotate into the empty spaces. Before a crown or bridge can be made the tooth must be reduced in size so the crown can fit properly, an impression will be taken to provide an exact mold and sent to the lab for fabrication. A temporary crown or bridge will be made and temporarily cemented while the permanent one is being made at the lab.

Implants

A dental implant is a titanium post (like a tooth root) that is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gumline that allows your dentist to mount replacement teeth or a bridge into that area. The dentist will examine you to ensure you are a good candidate for an implant, you must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support an implant, meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits are also a critical component to the long term success of implants.
