If a tooth has been broken, damaged by decay or has severe bone loss (no retention), your dentist will assess the tooth to see if it can be restored however in the case where this is not an option the tooth must then be extracted (removed).
With an extraction the dentist will provide you with local anesthetic for your comfort and will then gradually loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator and then use a forcep to remove the tooth. In the case of a more complex surgical extraction which is used if a tooth is broken off at the gumline or impacted the dentist will then make a small incision into the gum in order to access the tooth for extraction.
In most cases tooth extraction involves little to no downtime with some easy to follow home instructions provided to ensure optimal healing of the area.
Today implants are always recommended following extraction along with bone graft placement which can be placed during surgery or shortly there after.
In the case the dentist notices a growth or lesion in the mouth that may look suspicious or abnormal a recommendation for removal will be made to be microscopically evaluated.
